1989 Plymouth Acclaim

Owned by: Andrew Turner
Work done at Franklin Auto Repair

This is a section on how to make an Accalim equipped with a 2.5 with throttle body injection, and 3 speed automatic quick. Well, the answer was easy, put on a turbo and for a bit more grunt off the line, change out the auto for a 5 speed tranny. So, we looked for a donor car, and thanks to Melissa we found one. A 1991 Shadow Turbo with a 5 speed tranny. Should bolt in with no problem, but when looking at the wiring harness, wow did a lot change in 2 years, one plug with 50 (38 pins used) pin connector to  5 connectors with about 74 wires. Well the shadow had day tim running lights and air bags with sensors in the front of the car. So pull out the wiring diagrams, cut out what we don’t need, and try to splice through what is needed. We wanted to use the Shadow computer and wiring harness so just had to take off the shadow connector and put on the Acclaim connector, sounds easy! All the work was done by Andy and Keith on a long week end as the car was Andy’s driver for Tuesday.

Next, was to pull the Throttle body motor and replace it with the 91 Turbo motor and 5 speed trans. We pulled the clutch cable and pedal from the Shadow, as well as the shifter and cables. The swap went well, the only thing that messed us up was the trans mount wouldn’t work from either car. So a trip to the auto wrecker was in order. A mount from an 88 Daytona worked. The wiring harness worked first time and the motor fired like nothing changed. We had the car running for Tues but a lot of clean up had to be done, and the wiring harness had to but put in its proper place. We are going to turn up the boost a bit and add an inter cooler, maybe even upgrade the hub caps! Ha Ha!
