1988 Daytona Turbo II Owned by: Melissa Turner Most of the work has been done by Andrew with some help from his Dad, Keith. The car is a 1988 Daytona originally equipped with a 2.2 Turbo II engine with a 520 5-speed trans and rear disks. The car was bought from an auto wrecker in Cochran AB. with a blown transmission. When we looked the car over we noticed the intercooler was complete and the engine seem to run quit well although couldn't be driven. The car cost 150 dollars and also came with a new trans in the hatch (523 with shift cables). Once getting the car home we found the front struts, strut mounts and bearing's were completely gone. The real surprise came to find the drivers side CV had gone and was spinning in the hub, thus the owner had thought the trans had gone away. So we had a spare trans and just put in 2 rebuilt complete axels, this car had equal length shafts. Once again for info on FWD dodges you check out 3 of my favorite sites. Donovan's Dodge Garage, ( http://www.thedodgegarage.com/ ), Russ Knize's Mini Mopar Site ( http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/ ). Another good site is Gus Mahon's site, ( http://home.earthlink.net/~turbogus/index-old.html ) Gus passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident. A great guy that went out of his way to give out good free info for turbo Dodges! (Click To Enlarge) |

Work was done at Franklin Auto Repair.
When Andrew went over the car he found that the motor wasn't in bad shape and the head had already be done by some previous owner. One of the intercooler hoses had been taped up and the air cleaner box had had a poor repair, so he just put in a cone filter, and a new piece of high pressure piping from the intercooler to the throttle body. Keith rebuilt the turbo charger with new bushings and seals. Even before the car was running it was converted to a super 60 computer, injectors and then a 3” exhaust was added. We then stripped the car down and sent it to the body shop. We took it to Mahesh at Manira Refinishing, he not cheap but he is good. Door handles were removed and right front fender had to be replaced due to previous damage. The Front air dam came off of a 1991 Daytona and was just bolted on to the 88 front end to give a lower look. The side skirts also came off a 91 Daytona and were riveted on to the existing side skirts to give it the same lower effect.

Wheels are Drag 17 X 7 with Yokohama AVS ES100 Ultra high performance summers tires. 235 45ZR17 all round. The suspension has KYB GR2's all round, the front springs were just cut to lower the car 1.5 inch's. The rear springs are Acura front springs modified to fit the back of the Daytona, and they also lower the car 1.5 inch's. Part 2 The work continues on the Daytona. Keith and Bob now are doing all the work, so hopefully things start to pick up. First job was to get the doors back together, the glass has to go in and the trim has to go on and the lock solenoids have to go in the doors. The problem we had is you can't buy new door edge (for T roof cars) pieces from Chrysler and the plastic clips were about 60% broken. So I took the trim plastic home and glued and made the clips, All the auto wrecker parts seem to brake as soon as you take the screws out! |

This wasn't what we were expecting. We did how ever now that where the emergency brake came through the floor it was bad, but we didn't think the other parts of the floor were all that bad. So we starting cutting and putting in pieces. You can't buy any floor pans for this car so the patches were just made. Our patched were one gauge thicker than the original floor. After cutting out the bad area's, we were nicely surprised at how the frame was. We used POR15 on the frame and all spots we couldn't get to once the floor pieces were welded in. First the patch's were just tacked in, then we just went around and joined the dots. Still lots of welding and painting to go! |
